For the whole three of you that haven’t been to the Pearl, it’s a lot to take in. Inspired by a dream that once visited Christy Frazier, the Pearl is a fantastic 2,500 square foot space, located in Historic Springfield and filled with indoor tree sculptures, disco ball backdrops and the locally legendary light-up dance floor. Being that I’m good friends and a former flatmate of Christy, none if it really surprises me. She started out in the business with the Art Bar, located in Riverside, back in July 1999, blowing people away with the uber-fantastic fancy toilettes, which sprouted into an unexpected hobby that landed her special requests from the likes of Danny Elfman.

The Art Bar closed back in spring of 2005 due to an ownership change of the building the bar was in, but that gave Christy the incentive to purchase instead of renting. The Pearl opened only a few months later in July of 2005 fully equipped with her signature eccentric collections trapped inside shadow boxes inside the bar, picture frames all over the wall and even in the hallways leading to the 2,000 square foot deck out back. If the trees weren’t magnificent enough, there are 1,300 actual leaves attached to their limbs displaying just a hint of her impeccable attention to detail. How does she operate?

“My biggest thing in the whole wide world that I think is great is that I don’t own an alarm clock. That’s why I work so hard.”

But this article isn’t just a journey into the obviously chaotic mind of Christy Frazier. She has once again raised the bar in the world of indie-rock pubs by introducing a liquor license to her already stellar resume. After months and months of grueling paperwork, licensing and purchasing nightmares, she has her new liquor license cleverly decorated in glitter, sporting a kiss mark for all eyes to see in an antique picture frame on the bar.

With new nightly drink specials and the reintroduction of the always fantastic Happy Hour, you can now get silly full liquor style, instead of restricting yourself to their many domestic and imported beers on tap. My personal favorite is Friday night with VJ Jaren. He supplies not only rocking tunes, but accompanies them with classic, new and sometimes rare videos projected on three giant screens throughout the venue. You now have no excuse not to bring your asses down to the Pearl and take in a delicious Bombay Sapphire and tonic and an overall experience you would not likely expect from the sometimes cookie-cutter bars in the town we call home.
