Yeesh. The dreaded fourteenth surfaces its ugly mug at the same time every year, but it always seems to sneak up on the everyday single gal.
It hits me when I’m not feeling my best. When I’m searching for treasure in the hair color aisle at Walgreens around two o’clock in the morning and the magnetic-nosed kissing fuzzy bears and the cheesy fabric roses with enough chocolate to kill a donkey spread out as far as the eye can see. It’s bad enough with all the wedding showers, baby showers, wedding receptions, and engagement parties that pop up this time of year (invitations taking over my fridge), do we really need a holiday?
Valentine’s Day always feels like that last push to make the single girl feel bad about being single. It doesn’t have to be that way. There are the Holly Golightlys, the Elaines, the Carrie Bradshaws and the Samanthas. All strong fictional characters, almost iconic for their free-spirited behavior, as well as their extreme highs and lows. It’s easy to spot a serial monogamist verses a romantically handicapped broad. The latter are usually more adventurous, well-traveled and offer up brilliant conversations.
That’s not to say women in committed relationships are dull, I’m only saying that the single women have more free time to indulge in activities they want to experience. Your time is your own. You have no curfew, no one to answer to. So instead of sulking, go out and make the best of your time. Take a girlfriend of yours out to dinner, go fire a couple of rounds at the shooting range, save up a couple of bucks and take mini weekend vacations with a group of friends.
Embrace your freedom now and do all of those things you might not have time for in the future. And while you still may believe you’re missing out when you pass the happy couple on the street, you might also be missing out on the argument they had the night before.
