let’s do the time warp
The Rocky Horror Show at 5 Points Theatre
By:Morgan Henley
From: EU

If fishnets and men in heels don’t sound appealing to you, then this performance is not for you. If screaming at actors and dancing in the aisles sound like your scene, then you should definitely catch the Rocky Horror Show. It’s playing every Friday and Saturday night with two performances every night, at 7 pm and 10:30 pm through July 14.

Now, which performance you choose to attend will completely alter your take on the show. The late night showing encourages the audience to buy interactive scripts and a prop bag for $7 at the start of the show. If you fear you might feel like Janet and Brad when the transvestites come out dancing, I’d probably elect to see the 7 pm show. It’s got an Alhambra show feel; the performance is still personal, but this isn’t the matinee show you’d bring grandma to.

For the Rocky Horror Show, the play came before the movie, but the movie made the play famous. If you’re a fan of the movie, then you’ll love being able to do the Time Warp and call Janet a slut. If you’re unfamiliar with the tale, it’s about a young couple who encounters car trouble in the middle of nowhere and stumbles upon the castle of Dr. Frank N. Furter. The couple is easily spooked by a dancing transvestite doctor and some scantily clad dancers.

The show is being performed at the 5 Points Theatre (formerly Club 5), which seems to be the only place appropriate to put this performance on. The theatre was new to me, as it might be for many, and its location in 5 Points is perfect. If you want to make the 10:30 pm show, then stop by Starlight Café and have a few drinks before you make your way to the theatre.

The show has a strong energy that makes this production unusual. If you see the later show, the amount of audience participation can either make or break the fun of the performance. Don’t be afraid to get wild, because everyone surrounding you sure isn’t going to mind.

There’s a live band playing the music and the cast is very vocally talented. In particular, Aaron Marshall, playing both Dr. Everett Von Scott and Eddie, belts out some impressive solos. Both Janet and Brad, played by Sara Ruzicka and Mike Misko, seem perfect for their roles, as they exude pureness. Rocky (Ian Campayno) will probably crack a smile on your face with his too-blonde hair and too-tanned skin. The Phantoms dancing in the background are quite colorful and really add a lot of personality and exuberance to the show. One particular Phantom will probably make you do a double take, with hair that would make any shampoo model jealous.

Overall, Rocky Horror is a great way to liven up a Friday or Saturday night, so make sure you check it out. Seating prices range from $21 to $34, and if you really want to make the most of the show, get the interactive script and props for the 10:30 pm showing.
